FOCL Programs and Events
The Friends provide special programming and events to complement community-wide festivities.
Author Talks and Speakers
Great authors like Faith Sullivan, Lorna Landvik, Sandra Benitez, Anne Ursu, Sujata Massey, William Kent Krueger, Ellen Hart, Shannon Olson, Mary Logue, Pete Hautman, Erin Hart, and many others come to meet with their readers. Artists who are exhibiting each month often have demonstrations and talks to share their skills.
The Art of… series of events is sponsored by the Friends of the Chanhassen Library
Library Art Exhibits-
April: Chanhassen painter Joyce Ostlund
May: Cologne photographer John Zimmer
June: Excelsior painter Jerald Mirren
July: painter and photographer Ruth Tremblay: “Barns of Carver County”
Money raised at fun events like the library book sales ….make these events possible! The Friends also paid for the picture rail system we use to hang the art work!
Barkus Dog Parade
This is probably the most unusual Friend’s event ever! Owners and their costumed dogs compete for prizes on the Plaza outside the library in August. Many of the owners are also costumed, and some are VERY creative! Is that Dorothy and Toto? Or Jack Sparrow the pirate? Or Peter Pan?
Book-Club-In-A-Bag
Kits are provided to check out 10 copies of the same book for book clubs. These kits can be reserved on line through the Carver County Library web site, www.carverlib.org. Each kit may be checked out for a six week period, but they may not be renewed. The person who checks it out is responsible for the entire kit, both fines and replacement fees
Book Sales
Book sales provide a convenient and inexpensive means of recycling books. Donations of used books are accepted year-round at the front desk; tax receipts available. Sales held February, May and October.

Great Decisions Discussion Series
During his two terms as president, Vladimir Putin has attempted to remake Russia into a major, independent world power. Some of his recent policies have provoked concern in the U.S. and Europe. With a 2008 Russian presidential election expected, what course will Russia take?
Poetry Challenge
Each year the brilliant and talented children of Chanhassen get a chance to write a short poem and win! There is one winner from each grade, 1-5. This year a local poet, Susan Marie Swanson, will be reading from her children’s book, To be Like the Sun, and welcoming these new young writers into the fold. Info
Project Happy Birthday
This is a Friends' program that encourages parents to begin reading to their children at an early age, and to promote usage of the library by young children.
Summer Reading Program
Encourages children to continue reading throughout the summer to maintain their reading skill levels. This emphasis on reading and literacy develops better-educated children with more potential for success.
Adult Reading Program
While the children get to read and win- what about the adults?
We have two reading program for adults- in the winter it is HOT READS for Cold Nights, and there is also one in the summer.
Music Programs
Gasp! Music in the library?
Yes, we have had the Laurels String Quartet, Randall Ferguson, who is a collector of antique guitars and other fascinating string instruments, Steve Staruch from public radio, and the amazing Chan-o-laires! All thanks to money raised by the Friends. This is a great way to introduce young children to a free concert experience.
